DR STRANGELY STRANGE was founded in Dublin by Ivan Pawle and his friend Tim Booth. They developed a unique style combining folk, psychedelic, blues and baroque elements with the spoken word.
The band attracted the attention of Joe Boyd, producer of the Incredible String Band, Nick Drake and Fairport Convention, who signed them up. Tim and Ivan added Tim Goulding on vocals and harmonium which, coupled with Tim G’s individual take on ‘jazz recorder,’ made their sound even more distinctive.
In January 1969 they recorded first album Kip Of The Serenes at Sound Techniques studio with Joe Boyd producing. Their song Strangely Strange But Oddly Normal was put on the mega-selling sampler Nice Enough To Eat, along with tracks by successful acts Free, Traffic and Blodwyn Pig. The upshot was a vast increase in gigs, leading by 1970 to a fairly hectic touring schedule. The band broke up in 1971, but have decided to greet the reissue of Kip (on Hux Records) by reforming for a few gigs.
At the Green Note, you will have the very rare chance to see the three original members performing Kip in its entirety in an intimate setting, plus other classic songs such as Sign On My Mind and Ballad of the Wasps. Some surprises are promised!
Before the Strangelies’ set, author and film-maker, IAIN SINCLAIR, will read from his new book Hackney, That Rose-Red Empire, a 'documentary-fiction' covering 40 years of personal & mythical Hackney history, and beginning in the late Sixties with communal life and visitations by the Strangelies among others...
